The idea for this film came about in an odd way. Simone had been asked to do a live comedy routine and was worried about not having enough content. I jokingly - it quickly became foolishly - said "not to worry I'll jump up on stage with you".
Simone accepted my hasty ridiculous offer so we both sat there worrying. But it worked on the night.
I walked in and was called up onto the stage where Simone demanded to know why I was late.
My first words were: "I was thirsty so I stopped for a cold beer ... turns out I'd walked into a queer bar" and so it went on.
Thankfully the audience enjoyed our little routine. I was certainly surprised and relieved at how well it went over seeing how I managed to insult every member of the audience.
Being - first and foremost - film makers we both thought it would make a good short film so we wrote a 12 page script.
But at this point in our careers we are both a bit sick of making short films so we quickly got to the point of asking ourselves if this story could be a 90 minute feature film ..... yes!
The more we discussed it the more we liked the idea. We tossed around a few questions:
How would they react to each other? What would happen to them? Do they become friends or enemies? Are any of them who they believe they are? Are they hiding from the world behind their facades? Each question posed more questions.
We settled on 6 main characters: THE STRAIGHT is a Vietnam War Veteran good natured with plenty of rough edges.
And 5 of the most glittering, glamourous, fabulous characters ever to grace the big screen:
THE FABULOUS DRAG QUEEN ... THE OUTRAGEOUS BAR TENDER ... THE MINI-SKIRTED NUN ...THE QUEER WITH TOO MUCH MAKE UP AND BLING .. THE SCRAWNY BODY BUILDER DRESSED IN SKIN TIGHT LYCRA AND PINK UGG BOOTS.
These characters will be complimented by a cast of minor players who have to be seen to believed.
Simone believes the film is an out and out comedy. I believe it is a factual film with hilarious moments mingled with the drama that always seem to happen in real life. Perhaps we're both right. It is also irreverent, and at times politically incorrect.
The film follows these endearing characters through about 12 hours of their lives. During that time they embark on a journey of discovery, understanding and acceptance unlike any other.
These characters are mature, seemingly comfortable with themselves and are quite convinced the wortd just has to accept them for who they are (maybe).
The same goes for The Straight ... he seems to know exactly who he is. Or does he?
Will he be dragged kicking and screaming out of the closet? Queer or straight? You'll have to wait for the end of the film to find out the answer to that one.
And let's face it not all journeys of discovery are full of pain and angst ... some really are just downright hilarious. The film does have underlying themes of tolerance and acceptance and most of all it will be extremely entertaining.
Rather than preach and tell people what they should do "CAVEMAN" is about spreading a positive message about what can be done by everyone ... everywhere.
It goes without saying like most independent film makers we have no money otherwise we wouldn't be attempting to raise finance thrrough a crowd funding campaign. Keeping that in mind I'm afraid we can't offer a great deal with our thankyou gifts but we hope you may find some of them to your liking.
